The DBF005 case features a tachymeter ring.
The tachymeter was an important auxiliary function in the last century, especially in aviation and maritime use. Today, the tachymeter is mostly decorative and a popular reminder of those bygone days in Swiss watchmaking history.
A tachymeter is used to estimate the speed at which an object is moving or a process is taking place. This works via the hands of the watch, which react on a specified scale to a certain distance (depending on the scale, e.g. 1 km).
The modern DBF005 tachymeter has an ETA base movement 2892, and additional functions such as the chronograph and big date come from the small manufacturer Dubois-Dépraz. The company was founded in 1902 in Le Lieu in the Vallée de Joux and specialized in complications for existing movements. In 1975, for example, Dubois-Dépraz developed a wristwatch movement with a 5-minute repeater. For many years, the company supplied brands such as Patek-Philippe, Eberhard, Heuer, Breitling, Valjoux, and more.
The dial of the DBF005 has a simple design. This really shows off the chronograph function on the one hand, but also the tachymeter ring. The big date consists of two date discs and completes the dial.
The case is made of five different parts, which are all screwed together. This makes it possible to achieve a very high quality with the alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces.
A special feature of the DuBois et fils watches are also the screws on the back. Inside they have the shape of the company logo, the fir.
